When the old jail officially closed in 2012, it retired as the oldest operating jail in North Carolina history. For 116 years, the Old Marshall Jail stood at the center of Marshall, North Carolina, stalwart during rising rivers and boom times. In its halls, the community has recorded life, death and drivers licenses. Many locals recall the Old Marshall Jail as a gathering place in the heart of town. Our riverside town was not left unscathed, as 27 feet of flood waters rushed through the streets of our small, riverside community. In the wake of the storm, our town remained steadfast. Just hours after the waters receded back into the river, the streets were filled with something new: our neighbors, friends, and community - with shovels, hugs, and hope. Josh Copus Pottery Josh Copus is a ceramic artist and creative entrepreneur who is featured in galleries throughout the United States. The Old Marshall Jail is his largest piece of art. Josh’s vision for the old jail began in 2016. Over the course of 4 years, he worked alongside a team of contractors carefully taking the building apart piece by piece with the intent of restoring anything he could from the original structure. Many aspects of the building were built back into the structure, like the steel walls, iron plates, and custom sconces and railings he welded from original pieces of the jail. And many new pieces were installed, like the hand-stamped woodfired bricks detailing the story of the jail that have been laid into the walls throughout our building. The Old Marshall Jail is a creative project that highlights the impact of adaptive re-use. Josh makes most of his pottery in a woodfire kiln in Walnut, about 10 minutes from Downtown Marshall. For over two years, the Old Marshall Jail Hotel has been home to the only known recurring traditional ballad swap in the Southern Appalachians. Our Ballad Nights are hosted by the Nest of Singing Songbirds - 7th and 8th generation ballad singers Shelia Kay Adams (NEA National Heritage Fellow), Donna Ray Norton, and more. For over two years, they have gathered here to perform the songs and stories of their ancestors, preserving and sharing a living tradition.
